Meditation

Meditation is an ancient spiritual and philosophical tradition and has been practiced for thousands of years in order to promote spiritual enlightenment and self-realisation/actualisation.

Early forms of meditation were implemented within Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Regular meditation is proven to decrease cortisol levels; enhance immune function; improve sleep; enhance cognitive function; boost memory, focus and creativity, and promote an overall sense of relaxation and well-being.

Meditation is a tool for not only self-awareness, but one that makes you feel connected to the larger cosmic ballet. It cultivates compassion and connection to both the self and other.

There are many different forms of meditation, however, here are two examples:

Mindfulness Meditation: With this technique, the goal is to notice and be present with whatever comes up, without any judgement. By sitting down upright, making sure you are grounded and your spine is aligned, close your eyes and stay present with your breath, bodily sensations, thoughts and senses. There is no ‘right’ way to do this. If you notice your thoughts drifting, simply note them as ‘thinking’ and then return to your breath.

Loving-Kindness Meditation (Metta): This practice is centered on the heart chakra, and cultivates a sense of compassion and connectedness to one’s self, others, the earth and cosmos. Sitting in a comfortable position with your spine straight from your root to your crown, rest your hands on your lap. Either in your head or out loud, repeat the mantras “may I be happy”, “may I be healthy”, “may I live with ease” and, “may I be at peace”.

Feel how these words make you feel and allow them to settle in your heart, enveloping you in warm blanket of positive energy. Then, repeating the same mantras, send love to other people in your life “may you be happy”, “may you be healthy” etc. You can extend this to as many people, animals, or things as you wish. Further, you can also practice Loving-Kindness Meditation as a form of forgiveness.

Focus on someone you have or have had conflict with and send them love and compassion.

Yoga

Yoga is an ancient, spiritual and philosophical practice that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit word ‘yuj’, meaning “to unite” which reflects the practice’s aim to harmonise the body, mind and spirit. The beginnings of yoga were deeply intertwined with meditation and self-discipline, with the ultimate purpose of achieving enlightenment and inner peace. Over time, yoga has evolved into various schools and styles, with different physical postures (asanas) that promote a range of spiritual, mental, and physical benefits.

Just two examples are:

Hatha Yoga: A Yang form of yoga considered suitable for beginners. This form of yoga focuses largely on a simple sequence of asanas, while connecting with your breath control (pranayama) to enhance your overall well-being. Asanas include: Mountain Pose Downward-Facing Dog, Child’s Pose.

Yin Yoga: As the name suggests, this form of yoga is yin-based, and works on your connective tissues and joints rather than your muscles. Asanas are generally held for 3-5 minutes to encourage flexibility and joint health.
